Kobo Sage: Specs, Features, Pros & Cons
The Kobo Sage is the reader Kobo built for people who wanted everything at once: a larger 8-inch screen, physical page-turn buttons, a stylus for notes, Bluetooth audiobooks and waterproofing, all in one body. When it arrived it sat at the top of Kobo's standard-size range. Today it is squeezed from below, because the cheaper Kobo Libra Colour now offers page buttons, stylus support and a colour screen in a smaller, lighter package.
What the Sage still has that the Libra does not is screen area. Its monochrome Carta 1200 panel is noticeably bigger than a 7-inch reader, which helps with large type, PDFs and anyone who finds smaller readers cramped. The display sits flush with the bezel, and Kobo's ComfortLight PRO lets you warm the light for evening reading. The asymmetric design, with a thicker grip edge carrying the buttons, is made for one-handed reading.
Kobo's software is the other half of the case. You can buy from the Kobo store, borrow library books through OverDrive where it is offered, sideload EPUBs without conversion, and connect Dropbox or Google Drive. For a reader who wants to escape a single store without taking on an Android tablet, that combination is hard to beat.
The limits are real. The stylus is sold separately, audiobooks need Bluetooth headphones because there is no speaker, and the Sage is heavier than the smaller readers most people carry. It makes most sense for someone who specifically wants the bigger screen with buttons. For most other readers, the Libra Colour is now the more obvious Kobo.

Editor’s note
I think the Sage is now a specialist's choice, and the specialism is screen size. If you read at large font sizes, open PDFs, or find standard readers too small, the extra area here is worth real money, and the buttons on the grip make long sessions comfortable. Kobo's 300 ppi panel at 1440 x 1920 keeps text sharp, and the IPX8 rating means the bath or the side of a pool is not a worry.
Against that, look closely at what you pay for. The Kobo Stylus is an extra purchase, and on a screen this size handwriting suits margin notes and short jottings rather than serious writing. If notes are the main attraction, the Kobo Elipsa 2E or a large BOOX will do the job far better. Audiobooks work, but only through Bluetooth headphones or a speaker. Kobo also publishes no battery capacity, only a promise of weeks of use, so endurance cannot be compared on paper.
Weight is the everyday compromise. At 240.8 g it is still hand-holdable, but noticeably heavier than the Libra Colour or a Paperwhite, and in a folio case it becomes a two-handed read in bed for some people.
It is also worth checking stock before deciding. Kobo now puts the Libra Colour at the front of its range and no longer promotes the Sage, which usually signals the end of a model's run. Found at a clear discount, it is a good large-screen reader with Kobo's excellent open-format support. At full price I would buy the Libra Colour and accept the smaller screen, unless that bigger page is the whole reason you are shopping.
