You open Amazon on October 6 and the Kindle Paperwhite shows about $139, with $199 struck through. That reads as 30 percent off, and it is, against a list price Amazon set on August 21, 2026. Before that day the same Paperwhite listed at $159. Prime Big Deal Days runs on 6 and October 7 in the US and 21 other countries, and Prime Day Kindle deals will be measured against the new, higher prices. So a deal has to be deeper than the August increase before it saves you anything against the summer.
What went up on August 21
Amazon raised the US price of every Kindle except the Scribe line, by $40 on most models and $50 on the Paperwhite Signature Edition. Good e-Reader, which reported the change that day, quotes rising memory and component costs as the cause. Partner stores such as Best Buy moved to the same prices.
The last column is the one to take to the checkout. It is the discount, off today’s list price, that only brings a model back to where it stood in July.
| Model | Before August 21 | Since August 21 | Discount needed to match July |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kindle, with ads | $109 | $149 | 27% |
| Kindle, without ads | $129 | $169 | 24% |
| Kindle Paperwhite 16 GB | $159 | $199 | 20% |
| Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition | $199 | $249 | 20% |
| Kindle Colorsoft 16 GB | $249 | $289 | 14% |
| Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition | $279 | $319 | 13% |
The cheaper the Kindle, the larger the share of its price the $40 represents. A “25% off” badge on the basic Kindle still leaves it above its July price with ads. On the Kindle Paperwhite, anything past 20 percent is a real saving on the summer, and each extra point is a little under $2.

The price history link does the checking for you
Amazon’s own announcement for the sale points buyers to a Price History link on product pages, with up to 365 days of prices. For a Kindle that year reaches back well before August 21, so any summer sale price is on it. The lowest point on that chart is a better yardstick than the struck-through figure, which will be the August list price.
Look now, write down the low, and check again on the day. If the October price does not beat it, you are paying for the increase, whatever the badge says.
Color models and the Scribe
The Colorsoft needs the smallest discount to get back to July, because its $40 rise sits on a bigger price. That makes it the model where a modest October cut is most likely to be a real one. Our Colorsoft review covers whether color on E Ink is worth paying for in the first place. The Signature Edition may not be on offer at all: Good e-Reader reported on September 9 that Amazon’s US site listed it as unavailable while Canada still sold it, and Amazon has not said whether it is discontinued.
The Kindle Scribe models were left out of the increase. A discount on a Scribe is therefore a plain cut from the price it has had all year, and the same arithmetic does not apply.
The subscriptions offered alongside
Amazon has been adding reading subscriptions to its early offers. Three free months of Kindle Unlimited, which then renews at $11.99 a month, went up for new and some returning subscribers in September, and Prime may be required. There is also an Audible offer, four months of the Standard plan at $1 a month before it returns to $8.99. Both renew automatically. They are worth taking if you would read or listen that much anyway, and neither makes the device any cheaper. Put the cancellation date in your calendar the day you sign up.
Outside the US
Prices rose in Canada and the UK as well. A reader commenting on The eBook Reader’s August 21 post reported increases of 90 to 100 Canadian dollars on the Paperwhite and Colorsoft. The sale runs in 22 countries, with dates that Amazon says may vary by country.
Before October 6
Pick the model, open its Amazon page and note two numbers: the July price from the table above and the low on the price chart. Your target is whichever is lower. If the October price reaches it, buy. If it stops at the August list price minus a round-looking percentage, the Kindle you already own, or the library app on your phone, will do until the next sale.
