The 2026 Kindle Gets a Battery You Can Swap, on Amazon’s Terms

Amazon’s page for identifying Kindle models lists the 2026 Kindle with a “user-replaceable battery (EBR-compliant)”, a line that appears nowhere in the company’s October 1 announcement. EBR is the EU Battery Regulation, and its rule on replaceable batteries starts on February 18, 2027. So the 2026 Kindle, on sale now at $149.99, is the first Kindle in years built to have its battery swapped by its owner. How you will swap it, with what part and at what price, Amazon has not said.

A rule written for Europe, a Kindle sold everywhere

Article 11 of the regulation requires batteries in portable products to be “readily removable and replaceable by the end-user” for the life of the product, using tools you can buy in a shop, with no proprietary tools and no heat to soften glue. Every Kindle placed on the EU market from that February date has to meet it.

Amazon could have built a separate European model. It did not. The 2026 Kindle went on sale the same day in 19 countries, the US and Canada among them alongside Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden and Poland. An American buyer gets the design Brussels asked for.

The identification page carries the same line for the aluminum version at $189.99.

What the May firmware hinted at

The clearest clue to how replacement will work came before the launch. In May, Kindle software 5.19.4 carried text that Android Authority and Good e-Reader reported from a readers’ forum. One string reads “This battery cannot be recognized and may not perform as expected. Charging has been limited to protect your device.” Another tells the owner to “scan the QR code below to purchase a battery replacement kit and view instructions for replacement,” and a third points to a new battery page under Settings, Device Options.

Android Authority noted that the update was pulled after release, so none of this wording is a product announcement. Read together, though, the strings describe a Kindle that checks which battery is inside it. One that “complies with Amazon specifications” restores the original performance, and one the Kindle does not recognize charges under a limit the text does not define.

So the price of a replacement depends on who can make a battery the Kindle accepts. If only Amazon’s kit passes that check, the kit sets the cost of a second life. Its price is unknown, and so is whether iFixit or other repair shops will sell the part.

The rest of the Kindle

Amazon still rates the 6-inch, 300 ppi screen at up to six weeks per charge, with 16 GB of storage. There is still no adjustable warm light and no water rating, the two things that separate the basic Kindle from a Paperwhite.

Gizmodo’s hands-on gives 140 g for the new model against 158 g for the 2024 Kindle, and a thickness of 6.8 mm, 1 mm less. The screen now sits flush with the frame instead of under a raised bezel, and the power button has moved from the bottom edge to the top right. Amazon claims books open 30 percent faster than on the previous release, a figure nobody has measured yet.

The aluminum model doubles storage to 32 GB and, according to The eBook Reader, comes without lockscreen ads by default. Amazon’s launch post gives no US price for the plastic model without ads. The 2024 Kindle without ads lists at $169.99, so at a matching price the aluminum version would cost $20 more for twice the storage and no ads to switch off.

Same price as the old one, for now

The 2026 Kindle costs what the 2024 Kindle has listed at since Amazon raised it by $40 on August 21. There was no launch increase because the increase had already happened.

Prime Big Deal Days runs on October 6 and 7. A 27 percent cut on the 2024 model would only take it back to its July price of about $110 with ads.

Which basic Kindle to buy

Buy the 2026 Kindle if you keep e-readers for years. Lithium-ion batteries lose capacity as they age, and this is the first basic Kindle whose battery Amazon says its owner can replace. The 2024 Kindle is the better buy only at a sale price well under $149.99, and only if you are happy to replace the whole reader when its battery fades.

Neither Kindle has warm light or a water rating, and the Kobo Clara BW offers both at the same screen size. Until Amazon prices its kit and puts it on sale, there is no battery to order.
