Read as reading devices, the two split on weight and glare before anything else. The iPad Air 13-inch is the hardest iPad to place, and size is why. The chip will run anything the platform can install, and almost nothing at this screen size needs it; most owners will read, browse and take notes on a great deal of headroom. Where it quietly compromises is the display. At this money a standard-refresh panel is a real omission, and it shows in the scrolling and drawing a big screen invites. The lighter, cheaper eleven-inch model with the same internals is the more sensible purchase unless you specifically need the page area.
The TCL TAB 10 Gen 4 is sensibly specified for a specific household, one that wants a single cheap tablet and would never spend flagship money on any of it. The large battery for its weight, the generous storage with a card slot and the headphone jack are real conveniences. The caveats are the screen, adequate indoors and weak near a window, the ordinary refresh rate, an entry-level chip that stumbles on heavy multitasking, and a charger in the box slower than the charging the spec sheet advertises.
Walk past the iPad if you are buying to read; walk past the TCL if you read outdoors or work in demanding apps. TCL's own matte-screen model is the better reading tablet in its range.
