TCL TAB A1: Specs, Price, Pros & Cons

TCL's product page promises up to 16GB of RAM for the TAB A1, and the footnote underneath takes most of it back. The tablet has 6GB of physical memory, and the rest is virtual RAM carved out of its own storage. Budget Android tablets do this all the time, and it is the right way to read the rest of the sheet: the physical figure decides how many apps stay open before Android starts reloading them.

Strip the footnotes away and the TAB A1 is an Android tablet built for watching and browsing. It is the standard-screen member of TCL's TAB A1 family. The NXTPAPER versions swap in TCL's matte, paper-like display, and they are the ones to look at if books are the main job.

This one has a 90 Hz screen, a MediaTek Helio G100 chip and a metal unibody. TCL rates it IP54 against dust and splashes, which suits a kitchen counter, a car door pocket or a school bag. Four speakers point at the same buyer: someone who wants a big landscape screen for streaming, video calls and homework apps.

Pen support is there too, with TCL's T-Pen 2 working on the display, though the pen and the flip case both cost extra. The 11-inch screen sits in a metal body 6.2 mm thick, and a microSD slot backs up the 128 GB of storage, so a season of downloaded cartoons for a long car trip can go on a card. TCL has not published which Wi-Fi standard the tablet uses. It usually sells on discount for under two hundred dollars.

How this VS Score was computed

Score 57: each known spec is measured against the median of LCD tablets (5 products), then weighted; 50 means level with that median. In classes of six or more, a value beyond the class’s 10th–90th percentile range counts as that limit, so one extreme product cannot set the scale. 54% of the scoreable weight could be used; unknown values, features not applicable to this class and proxies (battery capacity where a rated life exists) add or remove nothing.

Editor’s note

I would start with the support window, because it decides how long this tablet stays useful. TCL ships it on Android 16, promises one upgrade to Android 17 and three years of security updates. For a tablet bought for a child who will keep it until it breaks, that is a short runway, and it is the promise I'd weigh before the screen or the chip.

Wired headphones need a USB-C pair or an adapter. TCL lists the audio jack as Type-C, and that single port, a USB 2.0 connector, also charges the tablet, so listening on wired earbuds while it charges needs a splitter. Families with a drawer of old earbuds for the car will notice this first.

The 8,000 mAh cell is bigger than the one in TCL's cheaper TAB 10 Gen 4, but the usage-time line in TCL's own spec table still reads TBD, so the maker has not said how long it streams. Charging runs at up to 20 W, and the box holds a cable and a manual with no charger.

Against TCL's TAB 10 Gen 4, the A1 buys a larger and faster screen, a metal body and a newer Android release. The Gen 4 keeps a headphone jack and costs less. The closer rival is Lenovo's Idea Tab, which has a screen of the same size and class, keeps the headphone jack and is sold in some configurations with Lenovo's Tab Pen in the box. TCL sells its T-Pen 2, with 4,096 pressure levels, separately.

Anyone who wants to write on it from day one should price the TCL with the pen added before comparing it with the Lenovo.

The bottom line

The TCL TAB A1 earns a VS Score of 57, above the median of the 5 LCD tablets it is measured against (a score of 50 is level with that median).

Who it’s for
A family that wants a large streaming and video-call tablet able to live on a kitchen counter or in a school bag without relying on a case for protection.
Who should look elsewhere
Anyone who mostly reads books should look at TCL's NXTPAPER versions instead, and anyone planning to keep a tablet for five years or more should look elsewhere, given how soon TCL's update promise runs out.
The trade-off that matters
The hardware is sturdier than the price suggests, but the software support is not, so it will stop receiving security patches while the body and screen are still perfectly usable.
The main alternative
Lenovo Idea Tab: it keeps a headphone jack and is sold in configurations with its pen included.
