The Max is Glocusent's answer to the most common complaint about bookmark-style reading lights: a small lamp head lights a narrow strip of the page, and the far corner of a large paperback or an open hardback stays dim. Glocusent's fix is a much larger head packed with more LEDs, so the light spreads across a full page instead of pooling near the clip.
The format is unchanged from the brand's original bookmark light. A flat body clips over the top of the book, the lamp head folds out and swivels, and three physical buttons handle power, brightness and colour. Folded, it is small enough for a pocket or the side sleeve of a bag, and it can stand upright on a table as a tiny desk lamp when you are not reading.
What moves it up a class is the range of settings. The dimmest level is genuinely dim, which matters for anyone reading beside a sleeping partner, and the warmest setting is a deep amber that suits late-night reading. Colour rendering is rated high, so illustrated books and coloured tabs look closer to how they would in daylight. It charges over USB-C and remembers your last setting when you switch it back on.
A clip-on light is still a compromise. It adds weight to the top edge of the book, it makes little sense on e-readers, most of which have their own front light, and on a thick hardback the head may need re-angling as you move through the pages. For anyone who reads print in bed and has found smaller clip lights too narrow, though, this is a considered upgrade rather than a gimmick.

This is the bookmark light I would point most people to first, mainly because of the wider head. Twelve LEDs spread over a larger surface is what makes the difference on a full-size page, and a 110-degree beam is narrow enough that less light spills onto the person next to you. The five brightness steps run from 3 to 60 lumens, which is a sensible range: the bottom step for a dark bedroom, the top for a dim train carriage or a stand-in desk lamp.
The colour side is generous for a light this inexpensive. Five settings from 1800K amber up to 6000K white cover everything from winding down to reading small print, and a CRI rating of at least 90 is unusual in this category. I would still live at the warm end most of the time. The cool white is useful for detail work but harsh at night.
Battery life is quoted at up to 100 hours from a 650 mAh cell, which is almost certainly at the lowest brightness, so treat it as a best case. Even at a fraction of that, charging every few weeks over a standard cable is painless.
A couple of cautions. Glocusent's own page is inconsistent in places – it calls the brightness stepless while its own chart shows fixed levels, and one summary line lists three colour modes against five in the detailed description – so we have gone with the detailed figures. And at 51 g it is heavier than the brand's original bookmark light, which you will notice on a floppy paperback.
For hardbacks and large-format books, the extra size is worth having. If you mostly read small paperbacks, the lighter original does the job for a little less.
