Whether to buy the 2024 Kindle Paperwhite in next week’s Prime Big Deal Days or wait for its replacement comes down to what 7 grams, a millimeter and a new display backplane are worth to you. Amazon announced the 2026 Kindle Paperwhite on October 1 at $199.99. That is the list price the 2024 model has carried since Amazon raised it on August 21. Screen size, sharpness and the battery rating are unchanged on paper. Pre-orders open on a rolling basis, and the listings reported so far give October 28 as the release date.
What changes on paper
| Paperwhite (2024) | Paperwhite (2026) | |
|---|---|---|
| Screen | 7 in, 300 ppi | 7 in, 300 ppi |
| Weight | 211 g | 204 g |
| Thickness | 7.8 mm | 6.8 mm |
| Storage | 16 GB | 16 GB |
| Rated battery | up to 12 weeks | up to 12 weeks |
| Water | IPX8 | waterproof, rating not yet published |
| List price | $199.99 | $199.99 |
The weight drop is about 3 percent. The thickness drop is easier to notice, since a millimeter off 7.8 is an eighth of the body.
The part Amazon talks up is the screen. The new Paperwhite uses an oxide thin-film transistor backplane, the grid of tiny switches behind the E Ink that sets each pixel. Amazon calls the result the largest Paperwhite display with the highest contrast ratio, but it publishes no contrast figure. The diagonal reported for both models is 7 inches, so “largest” is either a tie or a gain smaller than the rounded figure shows, and Amazon has not explained it.
Higher contrast on E Ink usually shows as darker text on a whiter page. Until someone photographs the two screens side by side, the size of that gain is unknown.
The price rise came first
On August 21 Amazon raised the 2024 Paperwhite’s list price by $40, along with most of the Kindle range. Six weeks later the new model arrives at the raised price. Against today’s list it looks like no increase at all. Against the 2024 model’s list price in July, the new one costs $40 more for the same screen size and battery rating.
That changes how to read next week’s sale. Our Prime Day Kindle deals piece explains how to check a discount against the summer price. Whatever the 2024 model drops to, the number to hold it against is the new model’s full $199.99.

The Signature Edition’s charging wording
The 2026 Paperwhite Signature Edition costs $249.99 with 32 GB, in Graphite or Seaglass Green. It adds an aluminum back, a front light that adjusts itself, double tap to turn pages, and what Amazon calls “pogo pin dock charging”.
That last phrase is the one to read twice. The 2024 Paperwhite Signature Edition’s extra was wireless charging on a standard Qi pad. Amazon’s October 1 announcement does not mention wireless charging for the new Signature at all. It describes metal contacts that meet a $59.99 Charging Dock, sold separately, and the same contacts carry the $79.99 Page-Turn Cover.
Amazon has not said whether Qi charging survives alongside the pins. If you bought the 2024 Signature to drop it on the pad by your bed, wait for the full specification page before pre-ordering.
The pins do buy something the old model never had. Physical page-turn buttons are now possible on a Paperwhite, through the cover, and the standard $199.99 model cannot take that cover.
Where and when
Amazon says pre-orders open “on a rolling basis” in the same 19 countries where the new basic Kindle went on sale on October 1. The list runs from the US, Canada and Mexico through the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Poland and Sweden to Japan and Australia. The announcement gives prices in dollars only.
It also gives no ship date. The October 28 date comes from press reports of the store listings, which agree on it for the Paperwhite but not for the Colorsoft, where one outlet reports October 7 and another October 28.
The standard model comes in Graphite only. Both versions keep the adjustable warm light, and the reported specification lists Wi-Fi on both 2.4 and 5 GHz with support for WPA3, the security standard on newer routers.
Buy now or wait
If you own a 2024 Paperwhite, skip this generation. The new one is lighter and slimmer by margins you would struggle to feel in a case, and nothing in the announcement changes what you can read or how long it lasts.
For a first Kindle, the 2024 model is the better buy in the sale if it drops meaningfully below $199.99, because the screen size, the battery rating and the store behind both are the same. Wait for October 28 if you want the Signature’s cover with buttons, or if a first look shows the new screen’s contrast to be a visible step up.
